It may sound odd, but most patent applicants are not inventors. Rather, most patent applications come from large corporations. The USPTO categorizes applicant size as undiscounted, small, and micro. Most of my clients are individual inventors and small startups that are micro-entities.
To qualify as micro, the applicants must earn below ~$190,000 per year and have under four patent applications. If you exceed either of those thresholds but have fewer than 500 employees, you are a “small” entity. If you have over 500 employees, you are “undiscounted.”

Meet the Founder
Walker began his career as a mechanical engineer. He worked in that capacity for over a decade, designing and building aircraft assembly machines. During that time, he worked with other inventors and engineers who sought patents for their creations. That’s when his eyes were opened to the importance of patents and intellectual property.
While still working as a full-time engineer, Walker began studying law at the Seattle University School of Law. He graduated Magna cum Laude in 2013 with an emphasis on Intellectual Property law. Alloy Patent Law was founded in 2014, and since then, he has served hundreds of individuals in protecting their intellectual property.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many patents have you filed?
Hundreds. With over ten years of experience in intellectual property law, Alloy Patent Law has had the honor of serving many creators. Our office is established in the Seattle area, but our clientele spans the nation.
How do I know if my invention is patentable?
A “patentable” invention is one that is novel, useful, and not obvious. Our team can conduct a thorough search to determine whether or not your invention has already been brought to market.
How long does it take to get a patent?
Data from the United States Patent and Tradmark Office tells us that it takes approximately 22 months to receive approval for a patent application. In some cases, it can be expedited to 6-12 months. Regardless of how long it takes, Alloy Patent Law will ensure that it’s filed to the highest standards.
